and many other professional fields.

But choosing Australia should involve more than university rankings or post-study work rights.

At Agastya Global, we help students answer the more important question:

Is Australia the right destination for my academic profile, budget, course and long-term career plans?

Why Consider Australia?

Internationally Recognised Qualifications

Australia operates under the Australian Qualifications Framework – AQF, which brings qualifications from different education sectors into a national framework.

Students can progress through qualifications such as:

Diplomas

Bachelor's Degrees

Bachelor Honours

Graduate Diplomas

Master's Degrees

Doctoral Degrees

Universities, TAFE & Different Study Pathways

Australia does not have only one type of higher-education provider.

Students can consider:

Universities

Best suited to students looking for Bachelor's, Master's, professional or research degrees.

TAFE

Technical and Further Education institutions generally focus strongly on vocational and practical education.

education. Other Higher-Education Providers

Some specialised institutions offer approved Bachelor's, postgraduate and professional programmes.

Agastya Tip

Don’t choose a provider simply because the course appears cheaper.

The qualification level, provider, CRICOS registration, academic progression and future plans should all make sense together.

Practical & Industry-Focused Learning

Many Australian programmes combine academic learning with practical experience.

Depending on the programme, this can include:

VET programmes in particular are designed around practical and workplace-focused skills.

Is Australia Right for You?

Australia could be a strong choice if you:

Think carefully if:

You are choosing Australia only because you expect permanent residency after graduation.

Studying in Australia does not automatically provide permanent residence.

You are depending on a part-time job to pay your tuition.

Student employment should be treated as supplementary income rather than your primary funding plan.

You are choosing a lower-level course that does not logically connect with your previous education.

Academic progression can also be relevant when your Genuine Student circumstances are assessed.

You are choosing a university solely because of its ranking.

The right course is more important than the ranking number alone.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Australia?

Tuition varies significantly according to:

University

Programme

Qualification level

Field of study

and sometimes the campus or location.

For initial planning, international students may find undergraduate tuition in the broad range of approximately:

AUD $20,000–$45,000+ per year

while postgraduate programmes may commonly be around:

AUD $22,000–$50,000+ per year.

Professional courses such as medicine, dentistry and certain specialist programmes can be considerably more expensive.

These figures should only be used for early budgeting. Students should always check the actual tuition fee for the exact programme and intake before making a decision. Current Australian Government course-search information shows substantial variation between providers and programmes.

Don't Compare Universities by Tuition Alone

Suppose:

University A: AUD $42,000 per year for a 2-year programme andUniversity B: AUD $48,000 per year for a 1.5-year programme. University A may initially look cheaper.

But the total tuition would be approximately:

AUD $84,000

compared with:

AUD $72,000 for University B. Programme duration can completely change the final cost.

Students should compare:

Total tuition
Course duration
Living expenses
Scholarship
Location
Health insurance
Travel

How Much Money Do You Need for an Australia Student Visa?

For the financial-capacity requirement, the current annual living-cost amount for one primary Student Visa applicant is:

AUD $29,710

This figure is used for immigration financial-capacity purposes and does not represent the student’s complete study budget.

Students may also need to demonstrate sufficient funds for:

Tuition fees

Travel

and applicable costs for accompanying family members.

Visa Funds Are Not the Same as Real Living Costs

This distinction is very important.

AUD $29,710 is an immigration requirement.

It does not guarantee that this will be your actual annual cost.

Real expenses vary depending on:

Sydney vs Adelaide

Melbourne vs regional Victoria

Private apartment vs shared housing

Transport

Food

Lifestyle

and other personal expenses.

The Australian Government itself advises students that actual living costs can be higher than the amount required for the visa.

Do You Need IELTS to Study in Australia?

Not necessarily IELTS specifically.

Australian institutions may accept different English-language tests depending on the programme.

For Student Visa purposes, Australia currently recognizes approved tests including:

IELTS

PTE Academic

TOEFL iBT

Cambridge C1 Advanced

CELPIP General

LANGUAGECERT Academic

Michigan English Test

OET

subject to applicable requirements and exemptions.

Current Student Visa English Requirement

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the standard Student Visa minimum includes:

IELTS: 6.0

PTE Academic: 47

TOEFL iBT: 67

with equivalent scores available for other accepted tests.

Lower thresholds may apply with certain qualifying ELICOS or pathway arrangements.

Important

These are visa-level requirements. Your university may ask for a higher score. For example, Nursing, Teaching, Law or another professional programme may have significantly different English requirements.

Can You Study in Australia With MOI?

An institution may sometimes consider your previous English-medium education for its own admission process.

But:

University admission requirements and Student Visa English requirements are not the same thing.

If your visa application requires approved English-language evidence, an MOI letter should not automatically be assumed to replace it.

Avoid blanket claims such as “Australia without IELTS.”

Check both:

University requirement and Student Visa requirement

for your specific situation.

Australia Intakes

February / March Intake

This is generally the main Australian university intake and usually offers the widest programme selection.

July Intake

Many universities also offer a mid-year intake. Australia's standard university academic calendar commonly allows students to start in Semester 1 around February/March or Semester 2 around July.

Other Intakes

Some institutions operate:

Trimester systems

or additional course-specific entry dates. Not every programme is available in every intake.

What Is CRICOS and Why Should International Students Check It?

Before choosing an Australian programme, international students should understand:

CRICOS

Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students

A provider and course offered to Student Visa holders generally needs the appropriate CRICOS registration.

The Department of Home Affairs also directs students to CRICOS when checking registered education providers and courses.

Agastya Tip

Before paying a major deposit, confirm: Provider Course
Campus
andCRICOS details
for the programme you intend to study.

Scholarship Opportunities for Indian Students

Indian students may also find:

University-specific merit scholarships

India-focused university awards

Research scholarships

and selected international initiatives.

For example, the Quad Fellowship includes eligible applicants from India in qualifying STEM fields.

Australia Awards opportunities for India should be checked against the current India round, rather than assuming they are always open. The Australia Awards India portal currently states that applications for India’s scholarship opportunity are closed and future opportunities will be published when available.

Can International Students Work While Studying in Australia?

Eligible Student Visa holders can currently work:

Up to 48 Hours Per Fortnight

while their course is in session. A fortnight is a 14-day period. This means the rule should not simply be described as:

“24 hours every week.”

The visa condition is specifically based on 48 hours per fortnight.

What About University Holidays?

Student Visa holders can generally work unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks, subject to their visa conditions. Students undertaking a:

Master's degree by research or Doctoral degree

can have different work-hour arrangements once their course has commenced.

Can Part-Time Work Pay for Your Studies?

Part-time employment may help with:

Food

Transport

Personal expenses

or part of your living costs.

But students should not build their study plan around the assumption that a job will cover:

Tuition + accommodation + all living expenses.

Your study plan should remain financially viable even if it takes time to find suitable work.

What Happens After Graduation?

Eligible graduates may be able to apply for the:

Temporary Graduate Visa – Subclass 485

This visa can allow qualifying graduates to temporarily:

Live in Australia Work and Gain professional experience after study.

The appropriate stream depends on the qualification completed.

Australia Post-Study Work Rights for Indian Students

This section is especially important for Agastya Global because Indian graduates have specific arrangements under the Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement – ECTA.

For eligible Indian graduates, Australia has committed to maintain opportunities for post-study stay of up to:

These India-specific arrangements were preserved when broader Temporary Graduate Visa stay periods changed.

Important

These durations do not mean every graduate automatically receives the visa.

Students must still satisfy the applicable Subclass 485 eligibility requirements.

Australian Qualification Potential Post-Study Period for Eligible Indian Graduates
Diploma / Trade Qualification Up to 18 months
Bachelor's Degree Up to 2 years
Bachelor's with First Class Honours in qualifying STEM / ICT fields Up to 3 years
Master's Degree Up to 3 years
Doctoral Degree / PhD Up to 4 years

Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

Students graduating with qualifications such as an eligible: Associate Degree Diploma or Trade Qualification may fall under the Post-Vocational Education Work stream. The qualification must meet the applicable requirements and be relevant to a nominated occupation under the current rules. The standard stay is generally up to 18 months.

Post-Higher Education Work Stream

Students completing an eligible degree-level qualification may apply under the:
Post-Higher Education Work Stream This can apply to eligible graduates with:
Bachelor's degrees
Master's degrees
or Doctoral degrees.
For Indian graduates, the India-specific ECTA durations above are particularly important when evaluating potential stay length.

Temporary Graduate Visa Age Requirement

Under the current Subclass 485 rules, applicants are generally required to be:
35 years old or under
when applying. Exceptions apply, including for eligible Master's by Research and doctoral graduates, for whom different age provisions can apply.
This is important for mature postgraduate applicants.
Do not choose a programme based on post-study work assumptions without checking your age and intended qualification.

What About Studying in Regional Australia?

Australia has designated regional areas outside its major metropolitan centres. Eligible graduates who study and continue living in qualifying regional areas may potentially access the: Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream which can provide an additional:
1–2 years depending on the regional location and whether all requirements are met. But don't select a regional university only for an extra visa period. Also evaluate:
Course quality
Career relevance Local industry
Accommodation
Lifestyle

Does Studying in Australia Guarantee Permanent Residence?

A Student Visa and Temporary Graduate Visa are temporary visa pathways.

After graduation, some people may later explore:

Employer-sponsored routes

SkillSelect

State or regional skilled migration

or another visa for which they qualify.

But these pathways have separate requirements and can change.

A university course should never be sold as a guaranteed PR package.

Australia Student Visa – Subclass 500

Indian students intending to complete an eligible course in Australia generally apply for the:

Student Visa – Subclass 500

Before applying, you normally need to enrol with an eligible Australian provider and receive a:

Confirmation of Enrolment – CoE.

The Student Visa can cover higher education, VET, pathway programmes, ELICOS and other eligible study categories.

What Is the Genuine Student Requirement?

Australia replaced the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant – GTE requirement with the:

Genuine Student – GS Requirement

for Student Visa applications lodged from 23 March 2024.

The purpose is to assess whether studying in Australia is genuinely the primary reason for the Student Visa application.

What Does the Genuine Student Assessment Consider?

Applicants may need to explain:

The current online application uses targeted GS questions, generally with a 150-word limit per response.

Agastya Tip

Your GS answers should explain your actual academic and career reasoning.

They should not sound like copied visa templates.

Overseas Student Health Cover – OSHC

International Student Visa holders generally need:

Overseas Student Health Cover – OSHC

for the required period of their stay in Australia.

Home Affairs lists maintaining appropriate health cover as a Student Visa requirement.

Your health-cover period can also affect the period for which the visa is granted.

Student Visa Cost in 2026

From 1 July 2026, the standard Student Visa application charge increased to:

AUD $2,500

for a primary application, unless a specific concession applies.

Remember

This is only the government visa application charge. Your total preparation may also involve:

Medical examination

Biometrics where applicable OSHC English test document costs and other expenses.

Australia International Student Numbers: What the 2026 Planning Level Actually Means

You may see headlines suggesting Australia has introduced a fixed student “cap.”

That description can be misleading.

For 2026, Australia’s National Planning Level is 295,000 new international student commencements.

The Australian Government explains that this is not a hard limit on the number of students who can apply. Instead, it supports the visa-processing prioritisation system for applications lodged outside Australia.

Australia has also announced the same 295,000 planning level for 2027.

Students should therefore focus on submitting a strong, complete application rather than assuming Australia has simply “closed” international admissions.

Before Choosing an Australian University, Ask These 5 Questions

01
Does the Course Match My Previous Education?

Academic progression should make sense.

02
Is the Course and Provider Appropriate for International Students?

Check the relevant registration and course details.

03
What Will the Complete Programme Cost?

Don't compare only one year's tuition.

Calculate:

Total course tuition + living costs + OSHC + travel + other expenses.

04
Would I Still Choose This Course Without Assuming PR?

This may be the most important question.

Immigration rules can change.

Your qualification should still make sense for your education and career.

05
Would I still choose this course if immigration rules changed?

If yes, you are probably choosing the degree for the right reasons.

Study in Australia: Your Questions Answered

Is Australia a good study destination for Indian students?

Australia can be a strong option for Indian students seeking internationally recognised qualifications, practical learning, research opportunities and programmes across fields such as Engineering, IT, Business, Healthcare and Science. Whether it is right for you depends on your academic profile, course, budget and career goals.

Tuition varies by institution and programme. As a broad planning guide, international undergraduate courses may cost around AUD $20,000 to $45,000 or more per year, while postgraduate programmes may cost approximately AUD $22,000 to $50,000 or more per year. Professional courses can cost significantly more, so students should always check the exact fee for their chosen programme and intake.

The current annual living-cost amount used for the financial-capacity requirement for one primary Student Visa applicant is AUD $29,710. This is separate from applicable tuition and travel costs, and actual living expenses may be higher depending on where and how you live.

Eligible Student Visa holders can currently work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session and generally work unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks, subject to their visa conditions.

IELTS is not the only accepted English test. Australia recognizes several approved tests for Student Visa purposes, including PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, subject to the applicable requirements. Universities may also have their own English admission rules.

For applicable tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the standard Student Visa minimum is generally IELTS 6.0, although lower thresholds can apply to certain qualifying ELICOS and pathway arrangements. Universities may require a higher score for admission.

Eligible Indian graduates may potentially receive post-study periods of up to 2 years after a Bachelor’s degree, 3 years after a Master’s degree and 4 years after a doctoral degree under Australia–India ECTA arrangements. Eligible Indian graduates with First Class Honours in qualifying STEM or ICT Bachelor’s programmes may potentially receive up to 3 years. All applicable Temporary Graduate Visa requirements must still be satisfied.

Generally, Temporary Graduate Visa applicants must be 35 years old or under when they apply. Exceptions apply, including certain Master’s by Research and doctoral graduates.

Eligible Temporary Graduate Visa holders who meet the regional-study and residence requirements may potentially qualify for the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream, which can provide an additional one to two years, depending on the location and circumstances.

No. Studying in Australia does not guarantee permanent residence. Skilled migration, employer sponsorship and other immigration options have separate eligibility requirements and should be considered independently from the education decision.
