All eight operate within a robust quality-assurance system and are currently ranked within the top 3% of universities globally according to Universities New Zealand. For students and parents, this makes university selection more manageable while still offering a broad range of disciplines.

Is New Zealand Right for You?

New Zealand could be a strong choice if you:

Think Carefully If:

You are choosing New Zealand only because you expect it to be inexpensive.

New Zealand is not a low-cost study destination.

Tuition and living costs need careful planning.

You expect part-time work to finance your full tuition and living expenses.

Even though eligible students can now work up to 25 hours per week, employment should supplement your budget rather than fund your entire education.

You choose a qualification only because someone tells you it provides a three-year post-study visa.

Not every qualification gives three years.

Can I Study in New Zealand Without IELTS?

Possibly — but there is no universal “No IELTS” rule.

New Zealand education providers are responsible for ensuring that international students have the English-language ability required for their programme.

Depending on the provider and course, accepted English evidence may include:

Some institutions may accept evidence of previous English-medium education in specific circumstances.

But MOI acceptance is not guaranteed across New Zealand.

As a general guide, undergraduate programmes often look for English ability around the equivalent of IELTS 6.0, while postgraduate study frequently requires around IELTS 6.5, although programme requirements can be higher.

Agastya Tip

Don’t choose a university because an advertisement says:

“Study in New Zealand Without IELTS.”

First confirm the exact English requirement for the course you actually want.

New Zealand Intakes: When Should You Apply?

New Zealand commonly operates around two principal university semesters.

February / March Intake

This is generally the main intake and usually provides the widest selection of programmes.

July Intake

Many institutions also offer a second-semester intake. Not every programme starts twice each year, and certain specialist courses may have only one intake. The New Zealand academic structure typically sees Semester One beginning around late February, although dates vary by institution.

Apply Early

Immigration New Zealand strongly encourages international students to lodge applications early, particularly around peak intake periods.

One Step Students Often Miss: Your Qualification Level Matters

New Zealand uses the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework – NZQCF.

Qualification level matters not only academically but also for potential post-study work rights.

For example:

Some universities and courses also conduct:

Bachelor's Degree

Normally NZQCF Level 7.

Postgraduate Diploma

Normally Level 8.

Master's Degree

Level 9.

Doctoral Degree

Level 10.

Post-study work eligibility differs depending on what level and type of programme you complete.

This is why course selection should happen before visa-benefit comparison.

Scholarships for Studying in New Zealand

Funding opportunities may include:

New Zealand Excellence Awards where a current round is available

The official Study with New Zealand scholarship portal lists scholarships offered by universities and other education providers, with eligibility varying by nationality, programme and intake.

Can International Students Work While Studying?

Yes — and there has been an important recent change.

Since 3 November 2025, eligible student visa holders may work: Up to 25 Hours Per Week during the study period. This increased from the previous 20-hour limit. Many eligible students can also work full-time during scheduled study breaks, depending on the conditions stated on their student visa. Always check your eVisa conditions. Not every Student Visa automatically has identical employment rights.

Agastya Tip

Treat student employment as: Work experience + additional income
not:Your plan for funding the complete degree.

What Happens After Graduation?

New Zealand’s Post-Study Work Visa can allow eligible graduates to remain and work in New Zealand after completing an approved qualification.

The visa can be granted for:

Up to 3 Years

depending on what you studied and how long you studied in New Zealand.

Degree Level 7 or Higher

Students completing an eligible degree at Level 7 or a Level 8–10 qualification, normally after at least 30 weeks of full-time New Zealand study, may qualify for the Post-Study Work Visa. For degree-level qualifications, graduates can generally work in any legal job, subject to any professional-registration requirements.

Important November 2026 Post-Study Work Update

From 16 November 2026, students who already hold a Bachelor’s degree and complete an eligible Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand may qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa.

The Graduate Diploma must be studied full-time in New Zealand for its complete duration.

Eligible graduates may receive a Post-Study Work Visa for the same period they studied the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of:

1 Year

Bachelor’s Degree in India → Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand → Up to 1-Year Post-Study Work Visa
Eligibility depends on the qualification and Immigration New Zealand requirements in force when you apply.

Short-Term Graduate Work Visa

6 Months

to work in New Zealand, subject to the qualification and visa conditions.

Before 16 November 2026, only selected Level 7 Graduate Diplomas qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa. From 16 November 2026, eligibility expands to students who already hold a Bachelor’s degree and complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma full-time in New Zealand, subject to Immigration New Zealand requirements.

New Zealand Student Visa

For most Indian students paying their own international tuition fees, the relevant route is generally the:

Fee Paying Student Visa

This can allow full-time study in New Zealand for up to four years depending on the programme and circumstances.

Immigration New Zealand requires an approved provider to confirm that it has assessed the applicant as having the academic capability and English-language ability needed for the programme.

How Much Money Must an Indian Student Show?

For tertiary study, current Immigration New Zealand requirements are:NZD $20,000 per year

orNZD $1,667 per month for study shorter than one year.
